Hm. Don't remember if I've dropped anything I've read so far since I've read so many but there are things that make me cringe inside, one of those things being crossdressing. If anything I read contained a super high amount of that I'd probably drop it. Other than that I'll read pretty much anything since I love reading any sort of drama

I would also greatly appreciate help if anons who know which publishers have links could tell me! It's such a tangled web, it would be nice to have some more clarity on it all.

Aside from shock value rape, probably when a series introduces a new character so that someone in the main couple gets jealous. I don’t mind it for one volume long stories but if it’s clearly just because the author has no idea how to add drama, I get immediately bored.

Oh, I don't know. I can't think of anything. I want to say Usagi Tier incest, but if someone is going to fuck a family member, in BL is usually clear in the first chapters.

This is shallow as fuck but it’s because I read a lot of BL for fap material, but I drop a series when the dude I wanna see bottom ends up topping. I check in when the series have vibes that they might vers (because hey 2020 BL have been doing that lately, so that’s nice), but that rarely happens.

Modern Japanese bl mostly focuses on sex and relationships, and those that do have some semblance of plot are basically titles about mafia that tend to be draggy and too dramatic for my tastes, but here you get plot focused stories of different genres and gay romance at the same time.

The translation of the original novel reads pretty badly, while Exiled Rebels do good work for a scanlation team, it's very obvious that they're not professionals when you read that much text. All the awkward turns of phrase and clunkiness made it so hard to read for me. The manhua scan is very nice though, and the quality has only gotten better since Bucci Gang took over. (There is a legal version but it is absolutely shit, pretty much unreadable. I scroll through it every week so the artists can get their coin and legal views, that's all it's good for.)

Holy shit, Lamento was such a chore to complete. It felt really good until the end of the common route, but went downhill after that – way too edgy and dramatic. Asato and Rai are amazing characters tho, such a shame the plot got bad.

Are other N+C VNs worth checking out and how are they compared to Lamento?

It starts off looking like it'll be like that, but it becomes more fluid as time goes by. It's one of those manga that isn't obvious how good it's going to be in the first few chapters. Nagi, the shortest guy, is very self-confident and actually ends up as more of a top by the end. Satoru starts off vers and stays that way, but his relationship to sex changes several times, he's actually the main character. Unfortunately I think Gou only tops, but he's kind and gentle and isn't particularly bigger than Satoru, especially by the end because Satoru grows a lot over the story. He doesn't seem to be against bottoming, it just doesn't really come up that I remember. Been a while since I read it though.

Lamento is supposed to be the best one, though I haven't played it. I played DMMD and TnC and they largely trash. TnC in particular is bottom garbage tier. DMMD is just boring.

This finally got me to read The Speaker. It was predictably amazing, fuck this is the first manga I could see being a major serious Hollywood film. The jump in quality from Dear Hatter to this is off the fucking charts... And now I'm fucking blueballed too because who knows if we'll ever get the rest in English. Same. It's legit the only BL manhwa webcomic I enjoyed. It's done two things I wish I'd seen in BL more often:
1) The MC admits he's bi rather than going through the whole "But I liked girls all my life!" shtick where they're either gay but repressed or straight but likes just this certain person regardless of them being same-sex. Mangakas are almost always repulsed to even mention the b-word, while this one casually mentions it first chapter.
2) Not every sex session is associated with anal. Its kinda tiresome that anal is depicted as the be all, end all in terms of sex in manga. Yet this manhwa is the first time I've seen where frotting is seen as good enough to get a guy off, even if the couple has already done/got used to anal.
Anyhow, Playtime with Hakdo is definitely something others should give a try, even if it is a manhwa.

Sweet Pool and Togainu No Chi are worth checking out. Sweet Pool is the best of the lineup and an insanely delicious lovecraftian story.

Togainu No Chi is edgy, full of rape and overly dramatic but it was (and still is to an extent) influential. It's worth playing for that alone.

OH also, the top panel makes it look like he's bending forward over a table or something when the angle should be more extreme if he's against a wall.
What makes it look that way? The extended arms, the torso which is too visible and the perfect top view from the other guy.
If it was foreshortened some stuff shouldn't be visible so perfectly on the guy leaning against the wall and reaching up towards the viewer.

Off the top of my head I can only think about kii kanna, she's kinda same face-y and her stories are simple, but her designs are lovely, and I like her watercolor a lot shes also very good at environments.
I don't have a bunch of published manga amonst my favorites now that I think of it and I'm very basic so I can't say I'm in any position to recommend stuff, hell I don't memorize author names most of the time.

"kunieda-san" in this context is his "fake" public persona and at this point of time the male lead is aware of that, so while Kei really wasn't fond of the idea of being penetrated that night, he wasn't completely serious. I understand that some may be put off by this though.

I think June did a lot of good work back in the day and especially in the later 2000s to 2010s brought over some good titles. Unfortunately they're run by idiots who can't handle money and the writing is really on the wall at this point. It'll be sad when they die since they're going to leave a lot of series unfinished, but they were never going to be finished anyways and maybe Viz (Sublime) can snatch up more licenses like they snatched up Finder.

I still find it hilarious all the disasters of the past few years. Having to kickstart reprints, losing most of their licenses, the Psyche Delico broken promises, and even this past while reprinting Twittering Birds 1-3 with absolutely no sign of printing the next vols they're years behind on.

I think a lot of it is down to personal taste, futekiya do a lot of newer stuff and are aiming to get titles from the BL Awards and Yabai lists. Yaoicat is 2 dollars cheaper, but their catalog is trashier for the most part. Also, I'm subbed to them but I am very suspicious whether they're paying translators or not. I'd pick my futekiya sub over my yaoicat sub anyday.

On the other hand, if you've already read most of what futekiya has to offer, then maybe it would be worth it for you to cancel your sub and go for yaoicat until a backlog of futekiya titles builds up again. I know they're unlikely to release many new titles this month, because Golden Week causes delays and licensing deals in general have completely slowed down due to the coronavirus.

I guess it's kind of weird but I don't read or try not to read obvious stories. Like where you know who the top and bottom are from the cover or where you can almost guess all their dynamics as a pair and story from the cover or first page.
It just kills all my interest instantly.
I know that makes choosing a manga to read a chore because so many BL do almost exactly that. But on the other hand each work I discover is like a hidden gem and unique in one way or another.
I also can't stand the older bishonen style.

When in an established relationship bottom is forced into the role. I don't mind a light banter about it, but when bottom clearly opposes multiple times and it borders on rape I just can't stand it. Her art is also very "different" than usual but in an endearing way. I just read pic related on Renta and its a hidden gem. It's about getting over a dry spell in a ten year long relationship, and it strikes a good balance between comedy and drama. It doesn't have great art, but that suits its low-key plot.

Too bad there's a real bias against manga with shitty art (but great plots) in translating, compared to the reverse - I would really like to read the mangaka's other works but none have been licensed or even scanlated.

Just bought this thanks to your rec, recently I've been enjoying things with quirkier art so I'm willing to give it a try.

I also recently learned that Renta is the only company that has licensed anything of Shoowa's so far. They have Nini's Forest, which is... Weird. One of her older works, her art and writing has improved a lot since then. I always struggled to get into the scan, but I did read the whole Renta one and it resonated with me a lot better. Very surprised that's the only thing of hers that has been licensed though, what a weird choice.

Just bought and read it, that was not what I was expecting at all. The first few chapters are really different to the rest? I liked the one about the beetles best and wish that one was longer, but the whole thing left me with a slightly sad bittersweet feeling. I'm not 100% sure what happened but I definitely liked it.

One question though, the forest was like an allegory for a peaceful afterlife, right? Also has her art really changed that much?

Not the anon you’re replying too but I also rec Tokyo Shinjuu for BL with an unconventional style but decent story. It’s about a guy who ends up working as part of a tv production studio and he falls for the director, who is extremely passionate about movies. I like it because the writing is down to earth and its characters are actually people with their own personalities rather than props to bring the main couple together.

You're wrong, the guy who watched too many shows about the heroes who save the day and their girl while growing up, gets obsessed with the idea of being a hero for his future girlfriend.
He meets the main character and falls in love with him thinking it's a girl, he's shocked when he finds out that's not a girl and that the way he acted was the opposite of the heroes he looks up to so much. He decides he's still going to fuck that regardless of gender.
The blond guy seems to have issues regarding crossdressing or identity in the past though.
You can already hear some retarded english speaking readers screech something about him being a trans woman.
