or "It's Hard to Deny" (that you're gay/ that he's gay).
The jest being stone and rejection.

There's suppose to be sexual tension between the two.
The horror of turning to stone parallels the embarrassment of getting an erection in public.
Literally and figuratively getting hard for each other. Although I can't say for sure if it's a matter of reputation or if they're denying their sexuality as well.
