Back when the internet was predominantly used by otaku (or MMO nerds tv often parodied) communities and had the 3D pig disgusting rule. You can say it was an early version of incel/MGTOW (but without constantly bitching about women and muh relationships 24/7), but in general they only cared about fictional characters; cosplay was often looked down at because otaku often looked at so much anime/2d, it exactly like the uncanny valley but in anime form. Even kigurumi/masks (but I think its mostly a bdsm sub fetish) of anime girls look unsettling. Even cel-shaded 3dcg anime gets shit on today because there's still something 'off' that people, who've watched hours of animu for years, pick up on.
