It's been known all along he's quite a fan of Izumi Nekotsuki (now Nukobao), his style's adapted from Izumi's very early on. You can see the similarity in facial structures, lines and colors (this is apparent in his earlier works). His artstyle just evolved from there, from copying a single artist.
These recent years we got more and more new artists copying Maz because his stuff sells, I doubt it'd be that hard to find someone with similar style (note: SIMILAR, not an EXACT copy. If they're smart enough they wouldn't wanna be called out for being unoriginal unless they're Kuroshinki). I don't think I need to mention the other ex-BMP crews. If I have a piece of art that's been done by Zamius I wouldn't be able to tell if it's his or Maz's.
Here's side by side comparison to Izumi and Maz. Even afterall these years Izumi's older works still have more charm in them.

He doesn't publish original mangas, original games, doujins, having a booth in an ACG convention, selling merchandises. In terms of popularity, he's big but he's not Maz's big.
