They're meant to be quick gists of what's being said so that an editor can re-word it using an appropriate character voice. You know, like how a cat person might say "purrfect"
I bet you anything that the character had a unique way of saying "shot" and *like pew pew* was a note to the editor about the character's verbosity. The editor would have rephrased it entirely to use somekind of gun analogy. "After unloading inside of me he's firing blanks with no signs of stopping."
