While it may look like most people browsing this board are males, Western yaoi culture is heavily populated by girls, especially if you look in places like tumblr.

As far as Western yaoi fanfiction goes, the difference is even higher, most yaoi fanfic writers are girls (you can find them at archiveofourown.org or wattpad)

For example, in Japanese romance stories, it's a huge deal for the main characters to call each other by their first name, or even the first time they hold hands together. In the West, you start calling other people by their first name right away, and holding their hands/hugging/flirting is pretty common even if you met them recently.

Among female BL fans, there's a growing trend about the importance of CONSENT. It's very common in Eastern BL fiction to see a relationship that starts with rape, and then they both fall in love. This is usually frowned upon by fans. In western BL fiction, you'll usually see both characters enjoying sex. In sites like https://myreadingmanga.info/ you can see BL fans' reactions to every comic, and people usually react badly to stuff like that.

Personally, I really like the works of Asada Nemui, Niyama, Wakachiko and Mentaiko.

As I was growing up, I started reading fanfiction and after a while, I finally realised butts weren't as repulsive as I thought, so I started reading doujins and watching gay porn. Then I slowly began to accept body hair in yaoi, then muscles, body fat, fetishes, etc. I think nowadays there isn't much that grosses me out in yaoi (scat and guro turns me off, but I'm no longer grossed out by it).

I don't mind censorship, but I do prefer to know what's going on (penis length and thickness) to understand a bit better what the bottom is going through.
