Right now we dont know what exactly happened, but it definately has something to do with external pressure (Kana's family) and the fact that Kana was attacked due to his colour and sexual prefernce.

It is even possible Kana is taking justice into his own hand and is hunting down the modern KKK members, in the story, a masked individual has been brutally assulting, killing and looking for the person who broke Kana's hands
