I thought the science was settled? I was told by expert that trains in tubes can't work because they can't go fast and they leak vacuum all over the place

Can we get a vote? I would like to know the consensus so I know if I have to change my mind again

Most of the Hyperloop problems were due to it being a giant pipe above ground. Since that tweet is from The Boring Company, it sounds like they're planning on doing it underground, which solves many of the engineering problems but not all of them, especially those related to safety. But if it keeps TBC busy reducing the cost of tunneling, it's still a huge win for civil engineering. Hyperloop might (very probably will) never amount to much but the incredible impact that cheap tunneling would have on the world cannot be overstated. It would be its own mini-industrial revolution.

Musk is trying to pull the same trick he used in SpaceX and Tesla. Bank on massive investment to vertically integrate to reduce costs and hope that engineering optimisations can substantially improve performance. This won't work for tunneling machines because tunneling machines are an open competitive market (unlike rockets and previously electric cars), and the fundamentals of drilling rock hasn't changed. There's enormous wear on the machinery as it tunnels through rock. Musk's proposals are quite superficial - angled entrance to avoid pit digging, all electric to minimise ventilation infrastructure and smaller tunnels.

Huh? An underground tunnel will still collapse if you suck out all the air. The engineering issues are all still there, which is that we don't have a material strong enough to bear that kind of stress while remaining affordable.

It's a near vacuum, which is orders of magnitude easier to accomplish than a total vacuum while delivering most of the benefits.
I doubt it's ever going to be a viable system, at least not on a large scale, but as a research project, it's likely to net some good advances that can be put to other uses.

Miles per cost of tunnel averaged ~1.5 billion USD and takes ~10-20 years to dig 1-2 miles.

Boring Tunnel machine digs 1 mile per week right now, and 7 miles per DAY for future iterations. For less than $10 million per mile.

The Big Dig in Boston scared most DOTs away from new road tunnel projects. Other types of tunnels tended to be for special uses, often where volume was more important than length. Atlanta's Nancy Creek sewage treatment tunnel is 8.3 miles long and intended to stop sewer overflows in heavy rains, so it needed to be able to store all of the storm water going down into the sewage system (Atlanta has a combined system so street drains and toilets both lead to the same place). Putting everything in a tunnel solves the terrorism/accident problem, but increases the cost 30 times so its even worse as a practical solution.
Hyperloop will only be a meme for millionaires who would rather take a private jet.

Your argument makes no sense.

Boring company has dug tunnels for ~$10 million per mile already, multiple times. It has demonstrated and verified ~4400 pph capacity run on just a simple <2 mile two way run with minimal issues with only 3 stations. They are currently scaling that up by adding more stations and more tunnels for more destinations. They aim for 55,000 pph once the Vegas Loop system is fully fleshed out. That's more passengers per hour than any metro train for 1/20th the cost of similar capacity trains.

Hyperloop isn't going to cost 30x the train, its going to cost 30x less than high speed trains.

The US has more km of railways than the entire EU (220,000 km vs 208,000 km) and has far more rail traffic. Its just that almost all the rail usage in the US is for freight, while Euros insist on running passenger trains for some retarded reason. US freight rail companies are profit makers & tax payers, while Euro passenger rail requires heavy subsidies to operate. The big reason for this is of course that US rail lines are almost all privately owned, and thus the owners focus on what makes them money, while in Europe most rail lines are owned by the government, and subsidizing passenger rail gets them more votes.

I wouldn't underestimate hyperloop. Its greatest benefit is that it doesn't compete with railroads for space, unlike high speed rail. That alone might make it more economically viable.

Yes. Euros would be better off if more people drove or flew, and used their rails to move more freight, taking many trucks off the road. Their current inefficient use of their existing infrastructure is a big reason why western European incomes are so much lower than American ones.
