But in general this kind of virtue signalling is done because people learn to get high on the sense of moral supremacy. It's a pretty strong dopamine hit, but if you get used to chasing it you need to escalate. Communists will swear all day that they're driven by genuine concern for their fellow man but every one of them I've ever met has been driven by the same self-serving short term desire to get high.
