Amplitude of a wave in classical physics is quite a straightforward concept.
However, I've been trying to understand it in terms of photons. What is meant by the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave? Is it analogous somehow to the amplitude of some kind of mechanical oscillator? Or is it just a point in space where the intensity of EM wave is the largest?
