The wonderful thing about plasma magnet sails is they expand until equilibrium with the surrounding plasma. You could expand it over a light second wide in the ISM and it'd still work. They're the aerospikes of sail propulsion.

The one thing plasma magnet sails can't do inside the solar system is accelerate towards the sun... but there are ways around that, especially if you invest in laser beaming infrastructure and propellant ISRU.

I’m not convinced that, overall, hyperloop can be (perceived as) cheaper, faster, and safer than a plane, at least to Americans. Not that it’ll have no market, I’m just not sure it’ll be huge. Especially as no matter what it’ll have less and less flexible coverage than airports and nothing international. However I think certain routes will be very popular, like Houston-Dallas and the pacific line. I can see it being appealing if it can be more comfortable than an airplane and it’s stations less nightmarish than an airport. If you can just get on and go then I could see an appeal for business travellers and for families. Especially if it has more generous/cheaper luggage requirements. And rental car support from Tesla would be a big help. Being able to have luxury cars with ammenities that an airplane can’t would also be another draw

If he gets his oil rig/space port thing and only serves major cities along the seaboard (Sydney, Tokyo, NYC, L.A) it may be worth it BUT then it'll be expensive and rich people don't want to fly in a rocket experiencing 3+ g's.

If Musk wanted to make money he'd use cut/cover maglev trains travelling at 500mph and try to beat air transport by being more convenient (less danger, greener, less security).

A 500mph train, that's large enough to have more legroom and conveniences to the average passenger and doesn't have the ~2 hour prep/security time with the flexibility of green (nuclear,wind,solar) power beats a airplane for 99% of the time.

I have done this in KSP. Cons:

Jet engines are wasted weight past a certain altitude, and so are wings big enough to provide lift during atmospheric flight. You don't need them past 10-15 km.

Good luck for the fuel and the engines to survive the reentry heat unless your design accounts for it. If you place the engines inside the wing as in your pic, then those engines are protected from heat, but won't take enough air during ascent.
And if the jet fuel isn't forward enough, the center of mass will be near the tail, and the plane will reenter rear-first.

Probably fairly large.. but the vast majority of it is accessed extremely infrequently. In principle you need fairly little throughput to handle a platform like twitter; it's no youtube. Probably it's not presently optimized for running on orbital infrastructure, but I think it could be done in principle at least.

Think of twitter like his PR wing. They say Tesla/SpaceX doesnt have a PR wing. Now they do. They got hundreds of millions of people under his PR wing. All for single price of $54.20B. Ford/GM/VW/etc spends ~$2-5 billion a year in advertisement each independently. On top of that, Twitter is Musk's primary means of communication to the world. If he was banned Tesla stock would suffer. Its controlling his own destiny in his hands.

You're mostly right. But consider that he's trading a fairly liquid asset (stake in a public company) for a relatively illiquid one (stake in a private company). He can still trade stake in twitter to other investors, but that's not as easy as with a public company (he actually needs to find buyers, not just sell shares on the open market.)

If Musk dumped tens of billions of Tesla stock people would lose their minds, this is a nice way to get less exposure without rocking the boat too much. People don't understand that Musk has basically zero cash though, he doesn't have 40B just lying around that could have been used for R&D or bribes or hookers and blow or whatever else people think he should have bought instead.

Also, I'd put money down on Musk ultimately profiting from the Twitter acquisition, which I would also bet was the actual goal the whole time.
