Conservational psychology? If you find some critters cute, maybe you don't hunt them to extinction because you want to have cute critters around you. Preserves a food source in the long term.

you find neoteny "cute". Big eyes, small head, soft features. The benefit is you grow more attached to your children and are more involved as a parent. K selection vs r selection etc.

There is no evolutionary benefit.
But the evil snake will attack the defenseless squirrel.
Therefore the squirrel has been deemed cute, because the snake is so evil.

I doubt it, but could it be that we evolved to find animals and especially their young cute because that spurred us to domesticate them and get an evolutionnary advantage that way ?.

Which would explain why we have more sympathy for pets than black people.
