Well, why not use their own pride against themselves? This may take a while, but when I was in college I did a similar experiment... it took a while grooming my sample, but once the idea sprawled in his mind, it took a life of it's own, my sample was more intoxicated by itself than even I could ever imagine. He would make promises that he obviously couldn't keep, and own money to people, he would hire them for silly things and big things, because he was so intoxicated by himself, his pride and ego, that even objective things such as the amount of money one possess and can spend was distorted in his mind. The end result was spectacular, I was expecting delusions of grandeur at the end, but this? This was another level, it was like he really was intoxicated by a drug, and of course once his spending and promises grew too big and he couldn't handle anymore he had to move from the city, because he owed it for too many people and too much (some people would threaten him, like serious threats), it was fun time for me, toying with a few subjects.
