Imagine the arrogance and stupidity it requires to adopt infinity into mathematics and pretend it makes sense, when there is not a single observation of infinity in the real world. It doesn’t even exist in our imagination. We can only imagine that we can imagine it. Just because you write “…” doesn’t mean you can assume the sum of infinite terms is meaningful. If you can’t represent it, it isn’t proven to exist. Everyone agrees that if start with 1/2, add 1/4, 1/8 etc. then your sum will get closer and closer to 1. That is what is meant when we say the limit of such a sum is 1. But to say that such a sum could be taken “to infinity” and completed is a huge error. The nature of the infinite is that it cannot be completed, it cannot be actualized. To say that the sum equals 1 means that somehow you got to the point where you could no longer add numbers (otherwise, we could keep adding and go beyond 1). And that contradicts the idea that it is infinite. No one is arguing that the sum completed is less than 1…the argument is that the sum cannot be completed in the first place!

Long time lurker, rarely post.
I scan /sci/ occasionally for interesting snippets. They do happen. Rarely. But I am usually bemused by the number of people who just shit post. I estimate about 90%+of all threads and posts are just that. Just shit.
I rarely post on even decent threads because most of the time they just degenerate into shit posting. If I say something relevant and factual and some troll, or blockhead, or 14 year old know-nothing will come along and bury everything under a pile of shit.
So I just dont bother usually. Its just as bad here as on reddit, although I will admit here is somewhat more honest shit in a strange sort of way.
So on the off chance that any shitposters will reply to my post I just want to ask, why do you do it? Like why even bother? What do you get out of shit posting?
