Coal and oil already exists. It's easier to scrub emissions than to invent something new.
If you are desalinated water, you are already screwed. There's better return on your electricity, like MRI scans. If you want fresh water, live near it. Plenty of it already. People pay to remove it such as storm water runoff and flood plains. Don't try to grow a watermelon in the LA desert.

That's not what the process produces. You'd need to expend extra energy for that, reducing the economic viability of the system.

Just why? The salt has commercial value, same with other minerals dissolved in the brine. Too many people turn solutions into problems.

Okay then, dump it into evaporation ponds if you have the space for that. The point is, the environmental objections to hypersaline water are bogus; you don't have to kill crabs in the harbor with it because even if you have to dump it into the ocean, you can just dilute it first.

not really
assuming you're evaporating 300'000 tons of seawater (300 cubic meters), you're trying to vacate ~5.7 tons of chloride ions and ~3.2 tons of sodium ions

Ah, expend even more energy on pumping around water. Dilute to what level? If you want to dilute the brine to that of the sea water, you'd have to use infinite sea water. So you're either being disingenuous or are an evil villain trying to trick the world into using all of its energy in a broken green scheme.

it's really not that much to pump around, the expense would be minor, and only undertaken if concerns for aforementioned crabs would otherwise prevent the desalination plant from being built.

You know, you can build a solar still with a piece of plastic. Could you build a solar still ship that's like a catamaran with a tarp in the middle that sails around just collecting water? You wouldn't get very much water in a day, but you could just anchor it somewhere and let it collect water. I imagine it would've been handy in a Waterworld scenario.

And you don't vacate ions, you use machines to remove salt in solid form. Have you even seen salt?

Dump it onto the desert and let it evaporate. Use one of those circular irrigation thingamajics to distribute it nicely. Then lie about it being a natural occurrence and make a tourist attraction out of it.
