for most bench work growing ultra pure single crystals is totally unnecessary. the amount of dust or inclusion of impurities is miniscule and irrelevant. thousands and thousands of procedures in the organic liturature totally ignore this. when you open a bottle of whatever from sigma labeled 99.99% pure it's not single crystal or intended to be.
for other things it matters a lot, single crystal silicon is really important for semiconductors.

Pasteur was able to separate the enantiomers of tartaric acid b/c they will crystallize separately from the same solution. He separated them by hand after the crystallization.
