He was actually quite a good soil chemist and did a lot of surveys on US lands to see what grew best, which had never been scientifically catalogued before. So while he wasn't a genius or anything, he was a good scientist that did good work in a time and place that needed it. He should indeed be recognized as such and held up as an example to be aspired to, especially by the largely-indigent blacks of the US.
