Scientists dont claim to know what dark matter is, but general relativity hasnt been violated in any other situation, the the simplest explanation is either that a: theres some extra invisible matter or b: gr is a correct yet incomplete model of the universe. Neither of those two things are what epicycles were. Also the cosmological constant wasnt ever finalized and Einstein discarded it, it wasnt ever entirely accepted by the physics community and thus not a theory.
