I read that if there is a major extinction event that wipes out all life above insects there will not be sufficient time left for another sentient species to evolve to the point where it can travel into space. The sun will burn Earth up before that can happen. Another theory postulates that even if its only humans that go extinct no other sentient species could evolve to replace human civilization because we already used up the easy to access energy dense fossil fuels. They wouldn't be able to reach industrialization. Without that they would be forever stuck in some sort of medieval tier civilization.

not if the universe decides to cause another mass extinction
there are so many events that can end humanity at any point in time, i highly doubt we will ever reach something close to being an interplanetary species

We could build a dyson sphere around the planet which absorbs the energy from the sun but keeps the inside sustainable. This won't start happening for hundreds of millions of years so we should be fine if we start next week.

It took 600 million years from first animals to humans, so there should be plenty of time for humans 2, before Sun is too hot for life. As for fossil fuels, oil needs to be pumped from kilometers below ground, but there's still plenty of coal on the surface.
