classes in the non focus areas to full out your major.
To do anything remotely interesting you need to pursue more education. That would involve more modelling such as FEA for structural folks, groundwater and open channel modelling for the water resources people, or earthquake modelling stuff for the Geotechnical people.
I don't think this is unique to civil though. From what I've seen, engineering degrees tend to be an introduction to a lot of different material.
