The fact that college professors are actively trying to fuck me over in every test really discourages me.
What's the point on this "FAIL FAIL FAIL" atmosphere in every STEM course? Fuck me I just want to study but this drains every motivation out of my body.

At least at my university (t10 nationally) we have a culture of "giving everyone a chance" we don't actually have a culture of failing students or weeding them out.

My department accepts 450 freshman students and we only actually have space for 60 seniors in our labs (and less than half our graduates actually find relevant industry placement btw, although most end up in good jobs). The fact is though that most of the rich kids, immigrants, AA placements, dumb people etc. will dropout or swtich majors, we never make our quota. According to us, none of the courses like (for us) Calc. 200, Chem. Eng. 101, Chem. Thermo. 200 etc. are "filter courses". In fact, we actually consider them far too easy and slow paced and we wish we could make them more intense so that we could teach more advanced material to our juniors and then offer more postgrad and specialist courses to seniors.

Low IQ, seriously that's it. I know students that grind 80 hours a week and still fail. They buy expensive PEDs like adderal, take extra tutoriing classes etc. none of it helps.

We seriously do not comprehend how anyone could struggle with our course work. In our cheme 101 class we literally have one equation to memorize that says IN=OUT and people fuck that up and can't do simple mass balances. It's not that we are trying to filter anyone or that this is supposed to be an IQ test, but you need to be able to solve these very basic logical mass balance problems to be able to do more complex things like solutions thermodynamics and reaction engineering (what's actually needed for industry). In the past this material was taught within a week before moving on to entropy balances etc. and now students need a full semester and still can't get it.

Also with calculus, it's not supposed to be a filter course, in fact in the minimum requirements to our programme students are supposed to have done it already anyway to the second year level that the local math department teaches. But, for example, most thirdie countries (and some local private schools) do it so superficially that they cannot pass while calc 2 while it's actually supposed to be a GPA booster. I was genuinely shocked the first time I heard students call it a filter course, but what are we going to do just reject every third world applicant despite them having perfect GPAs?

So again we have a culture of "giving everyone a chance", but they don't usually succeed; IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A FILTER COURSE.

Over my 4 years of uni I've had:

Probably is larping, students failing is more of a professor thing than a student thing at the end of the day. The content the students learn clearly is possible to learn otherwise it would be some niche PhD topic, most the time the hardest content is often either:
1) Not explained properly, control theory is a good explain, textbooks make it hard as shit but someone like Brian Douglas explains it and it's easy to understand
2) There's so many layers of abstraction that it shouldn't be expected to know something since it's pretty useless and is just something to memorise for exams then only know where to find it in a book, assumptions in engineering tend to be examples of this
3) Anon's supposed class has exams where the content is pretty separate from what was taught, or has unreasonable standards for the class, I had a CFD class where the lecturer spent all the lectures explaining fluid dynamics via meshes and quality of the meshes and how it all works, sure it's good but the exam was based around using ANSYS which he only gave 1 20 minute lecture on making something completely different from the exam (a lot of people failed that one)

Of course there's a ton of lazy students who expect to be spoonfed (I don't disagree, I pay £9.25k a year for an education I don't want to have to learn half of it myself due to some cunt not doing their job), but the mentality of unnaturally filtering the classes is counter-intuitive as an educator and clearly just to stroke the lecturer's own ego because "ha ha my niche basketweaving topic is so incredibly hard everyone fails it, and because I'm the best of it, it means I'm so smart". Unfortunately academia is built off people trying to prove how smart they are and make people know it that it causes problems in education

I've had lectures on fluid dynamics (2) that was a constant stream of uncoherent bullshit that made Vsauce videos look a coherent summary by comparison, was a pain in the arse to learn but went to better resources and I get the topic, the lectures were objectively a clusterfuck but I can figure out what they were referring to

I think this is more symptomatic of shitty state schools. In high school I had a 4.4 GPA and never got below a B on any assignment, or below an A on anything in math/science where grades couldn't be subjectively lowered. My high school teachers weren't brilliant, but they were specifically trained to teach their subjects and generally taught them well.

I scored well on my SAT and could have gone to any university, but my dad forced me to go to a state school because I qualified for an academic scholarship there, which saved him money. The educational quality in university was worse than my high school, professors had no training or desire to teach, and grading was done by foreign grad students, and tended to be extremely harsh and inconsistent. An algebraic mistake that would have been docked one point on an exam in high school could cost 10-20 points in college and lower your grade by two letters.

I found out later on that low grades are almost never handed out at elite universities, so people who go to more competitive schools also get into more competitive grad schools, get better jobs, faster promotions, etc. I saw this first hand at a company where I worked where a dude my age with the same major as me at a better university was running a department with 150 people, making around $400k while I was a pleb-tier engineer who got laid off within a year when upper management decided to "trim" headcount.

My dad basically fucked my entire life over because he wanted to save money.

BC calc was pretty easy and I got a 5 on the AP test btw. I also took all 3 AP physics tests. I took 9 AP tests total and didn't score below 4 on any. The effort was entirely wasted though, because the shitty state school never gave me college credit for any of those classes and forced me to waste a year taking their version covering the same material.

My uni insists on a 30%/70% coursework/exam split, even on topics that would be better for projects. And even those projects care more about the glorified lab report rather than the engineering work performed, I had a project before where they made it actually impossible to do at your current knowledge level (only ones who did well had an uncle or dad in engineering to help them), but the reason they did that was because they had to mark performance, but didn't want students getting high marks for anything other than the report, so they made it based on performance they couldn't achieve and the marks were like 10% max.

Also a lot of lecturers have to fit their grades to show management the students didn't get an easy exam, so easy topics tend to get sabotaged to be harder or have absurd exams (same even happens in the opposite sense with bad lecturers, they stay in lecturing because the exams are easy so students can still get a 60% average, even if they learnt nothing)

But yea elite schools pretty much guarantee good grades since it's full of a lot of rich kids who can complain, and already has nothing to prove. Mechanical Engineering. Yea the maths part are easy 100% correct since the question is inherently objective but at my uni they always include subjective questions worth about 30-50% of the exam so it essentially is a soft-cap since the answer often requires some irrelevant extra part to get the full marks.

As for the projects it's pretty much the opposite, the product is completely irrelevant (mentioned here >>14406318). I suppose maths and physics is inherently academic so the project is also academic, with engineering there's a divide since often it's more of an art of making something that meets spec and works, but the supervisors only know how to do stuff academically (no industry experience), so they only care about the report since that's the only part they understand. Your major seems pretty good though, how it should be for a course.

My kids probably won't have the same issue since (a) my odds of meeting an intelligent girl to have kids with are looking pretty grim, (b) even if I could find someone, I wouldn't want to get married in the US, and (c) given the rising cost of tuition, I won't be able to afford private university for my kids by the time they're 18 anyway and wouldn't want to saddle them with a million dollars of debt that can never be discharged.

Basically, everything here is fucked. My intelligence has been wasted in my own life and it's probably better that I don't pass it on anyway since it's proven to be nothing but a curse.

I can't say for sure how it works at your institution, but in my experience as a chemE undergrad some of you suck absolute baby dick at teaching the most basic of concepts and it makes me wonder why you bothered to be professors in the first place. And then after this you give retarded test questions with long convoluted prompts with upwards of 10 systems of equations necessary to solve by hand on a test for 4 or so questions each, in an hour's time. [honestly time is the biggest factor why students fail exams, not misunderstanding concepts] And then afterwards wonder why class averages are in the 30s or 40s of percent. Obviously the students have personal responsibility for coming to the professor when they got issues with grasping concepts, but so many ChemE professors just resort to "muh textbook" when students are stuck on conceptual shit the teacher didn't bother teaching. Thermo classes are egregious at this.

Never failed any of these courses despite their atrocity of a curriculum. I won't even deny low IQ but I found I performed very well in the more industry relevant courses that use these early classes as a foundation like reaction engineering/kinetics, fluid dynamics, separation processes, and heat+mass transfer. It makes a world's difference when your professor is actually trying to teach you something. Maybe the online Zoom bs ruined my experience in some of these classes, but many times "filter" courses are the fault of the professors who teach them

None of these courses are difficult, even when learning them, it's very doable. None of these early classes even ask for projects. It's just assignments and tests.

Just do your work every week as perfectly as possible, understand every question, look at exams as assignments and spend time understanding them after the exam, you'll be fine if you do this but you likely aren't mature enough.

If you can't even be self sufficient or at least find a study group to lean on, you won't make it.

It really depends on what you're pursuing. Some fields lead way to creating more useless professors than others. From my experience, chem and bio normally have solid profs for intro courses, but once you get to the higher stuff it can really bring out their flaws, especially with chem.
For whatever reason physics and math are a complete craphshoot. Unless you've got a Chinese math prof you have a chance of dealing with a completely useless human being thats more like a kitchen nightmares chef than a teacher. For whatever reason I've encountered a few of these in math courses. It sucks dick but sometimes you have to metagame the institution to have a decent experience.

We are not employed to teach you, we are primarily employed as researchers. Most semesters even half the senior staff don't have any teaching duties at all. I know you want a system where we treat seminars and lectures like highschool style classes, but this is an impossibility, the undergrad programme would take 10+ years to finish rather than 4. You have to learn how to self-study and take responsibility for your own education like students before you have done since time immemorial.

There are pure "educator" positions often held by emritus professors, but you should not rely on those anyway.

This is incorrect. We even have take home exams in some modules where some students return a blank page. The most common error is a blank page because students don't know how to solve the problem correctly. The reason for this is very intentional. You will see in your senior year the amount of material you have to cover, it would take years to cover in lectures. So one way or the other you have to learn how to learn primarily from a textbook, which is by far the fastest and most efficient way to learn. A lot of love, care and epistemological philosophy is put into those textbooks. Years of super expensive sabbaticals went into them. You should use them.

I can't say this has ever been done in my classes, but any software we are given by our professors are in retarded programs like Mathcad, expecting us to know how to use it. Yes it's true there will be students who will fuck up and not know how to do things anyways, but quite often I've seen that some exams were too long for my classmates or I to finish all questions and most points in my classes are lost to students misinterpreting questions because we often don't have time to understand given prompts fully.

That's literally what university is supposed to be. The professors are there to write the syllabus and answer questions you have during lectures and office hours, that's actually their only prescribed duties, many of our best senior staff only use lecture hours to answer questions and the students perform well because they are forced to read the syllabus and study the textbook like they should always have been doing.

This is also what every postgrad course is like, there are usually no lectures, maybe you will have one or two big seminars per semester.

Well 70 is pretty good I would not curve that up actually I think it proves the exam was doable. We've also had exams with low averages, even into 20s and then we just curve up. It's actually harder to set exams for senior material than you think it is.

Have you considered the possibility these institutions are not designed to educate you (or even to have you educate yourself) as their primary function?
You should check out "An empirical introduction to youth" by Bronski.
Basically only 12% of the population actually need some degree level training. And of those 12% approx 75% of what they learn in their degree will be useless.
Fundamentally this means the education system is exploitative. It takes up YOUR time in useless activities, oh you have to pay for it btw, and you should be thankful for this because education is a "right" or some shit. The whole "fail fail fail" atmosphere is designed to keep you on edge, so you dont ask these sort of questions.
The youth in most developed countries have been absolutely sold out. You're probably a bit burnt out as well. Universities are not good environments: they are incredibly cultish, narrowminded and detached from the real world.
This isn't to say you shouldn't go. It makes sense to go for many people due to the feudal, title driven nature of our economy. What helped me was getting out into the real world a bit with one of my uni friends. We used to go to a nearby city which was a bit rougher, but put everything into perspective. Universities, professors, and the world they have constructed for themselves are a bubble with little connection to reality.
Its good to go through failure points aswell - it means you understand those kids in high school who weren't good at maths or whatever subject.

There are a lot of nuances in applied work that are easily overlooked by a cloistered mathematician who's only ever been presented the problem after it's been intensely cleaned and sent to an academic journal. Same thing occurs with certain physicists too.

At which point, the question becomes "Why am I paying so much to teach myself this stuff?".

I genuinely don't know. I assume the justification from the professor would be something along the lines of wanting students to do independent study. I don't find this to be satisfactory as it makes much of the professor's material trivial, or only useful for extremely rare cases typically not covered in that course. Obviously, knowing how to derive equations and understand some of the theory is important, but imagine a calculus class where the professor only ever shows you how to take the derivative by limit process. While this is a completely fair and proper means of doing these problems, it is less than ideal in many cases and can take a long time.

Literally I have learned at University so far I could have learned from books. The only difference is that at University, you take these stupid fucking exams that are completely removed from the real world.
I'd like to meet the person who has to calculate the surface area of a given rhombus, it's volume and the size of the tetrahedron he could create from these values in less than 60 minutes as his entire future depends on it. Nowhere I worked so far did anybody give me a list of things to calculate and said "I want this done in 60 minutes, don't use anything that may help you". It certainly isn't the best way to check if somebody has the required skillset to pass, it only filters out people who are not as good in rote memorization as others.
I have found these people to oftentimes be more creative and finding better solutions than university drone #29385794054.

That was the case for my previous studies abroad. In these studies here in Germany it's an unholy mixture of things I already know technically - but then it is alienated to the point where it becomes difficult to solve. They are also somewhat watered down problems of industry, but not quite.
Which is why I digitized all the previous exams I have acquired access to, am re-structuring all formulae that the professor had in his shitty ppt into a single office document, and will do the previous exams as practice exams. The departments are NOT allowed to just accept freshmen students solely by academic merit.
They need to have a 'balanced' population of freshmen; based on gender, race, religion, economic backgrounds, etc.

I'm not sure why you have a problem with this process, that's exactly a skill you need to learn to solve problems in real life too. You will be looking at papers and textbook solutions and distilling and summarising it for yourself and for others. This is actually one of those skillsets to people will pay you real world money to do, unlike regurgitating paterns of simple worked out tutorial problems. A good professor will then make the following year's exams more difficult requiring a different problem solving approach so that's students can re-learn what you have done. You have have almost certainly gained a deeper understanding of how to apply principles you have already learned, you just don't like the fact that it took time and effort?

As for sharing it with your classmates that's precisely what you should be doing, assuming you also get things from them in return. Office politics is hardly any different.

IQ (and maybe culture) also plays a role. I have worked with grads from just about every major STEM power country and the thirdies are incapable of innovation. Maybe it's their universities being too easy or it is because they have a low IQ drone culture. I don't think it's beneath me at all, I actually enjoy teaching and my course has the second highest student rating in the department feedback surverys. I spend most of my free time in evenings making high quality slides, project code etc. I am mostly pointing out to that Professors have other duties and limited time for teaching duties. Like right now (I am junior faculty not even a full Professor who are way busier) I am stuck in a retardedly pointless 3 hour long Zoom meeting of my grant consortium that I have to pay semi-attention to and can't get other work done. I would love to work on my own research or make nicer slides, but I have a fuckton of other meetings after this.

The only people that make really high quality teaching material like you will find on OCW etc. are emeritus Professors who have the time and money for it. I have seen younger people try to do it and they crash and burn because their h-index falls, they don't get their next grant etc. and don't get their contracts renewed (as much as we want to, there is not enough money for that). I have also seen the failure of the model where you employ "teacher" faculty apart from research faculty who are employed solely on undergrad tuition money and only have teaching duties and guess what; you end up with shitty retards who are even worse at teaching because those positions can't be paid as well as industry and R&D career positions. That's why I said earlier the ideal you want with "highschool style classes" being taught by competent staff full time probably can't exist outside of a digital format (which is hopefully the future).

They aren't giving you As because you went to office hours, it's because you demonstrated your knowledge of the subject at office hours.

There is never an attitude of wanting to fail students. But if an examiner sees two partial answers and the one has something indiscernible while the other wrote down things hinting at knowledge that you already know the student has, then the former will get a C and the latter will get an A. I've seen people get half the credit for a problem because they just wrote down the name of the correct theorem to apply to a derivation and nothing else (due to spending too much time on the other problems). It really does take the bare minimum to pass, but you need to communicate your knowledge somehow and in written exams that means not always solving every problem, but outlining it even before you begin so that you don't have blank pages where the only possible mark is zero.
