Why don't universities filter applicants based on IQ? It would make life so much easier for retards who struggle & eventually dropout, faculty and then students who have the means to succeed

No point, really. They already filter by grades which is good enough, and the remainder of the retards are not resource intensive if the faculty is competent (they should be filtered within the first three semesters).

Because if you started selecting applicants based on raw intellectual potential, but set the standards low enough that the sort of people currently infesting universities would still be eligible under your new system, you'd create a system where half of the population is automatically elligible. The higher education system lives off of highly studious, highly compliant midwits. The average IQ in an average university is no higher than 110. If they started to filter based on IQ, they would lose most of their customers, and would have to profoundly restructure the courses and character of the education they provide.

yes. I believe most high IQ (>130) people decide to not go to university (at least in the traditional sense, exceptions: physics, engineering) nowadays.

They will usually have learned to code in their teens and start out hacking or become an open source maintainer. Once they get a bit more adult (like years 20-24) they will get a real job (SWE) or study (properly, promising field) to get a high profile job.

Ive seen this myself happen around me.

I have above 140 IQ and am a terrible student (can't concentrate for over 30 minutes, get demotivated and fail out of boring courses).
I will never finish my degree, but I did a coding bootcamp and now I work as a programmer. IQ is largely worthless when it comes to universities.

The relationship between IQ and intelligence is inverse. The higher your IQ, the dumber you are. It has always taken some low IQ individual to make sense of the mess produced by high IQ people, whose brains aretoo eager to extra and interpolate based on too little information. Think of how google sucks recently, that's sort of like a high IQ process in action.
