Eh... they're throwing away an enlarged second stage and an expensive high efficiency high ISP engine with each Neutron flight. That cost they'll have to pass down to the customer, and it will make them an even more niche product than they are already. By the time Neutron flies routinely enough to justify its use, good chance Starship will be flying infrequently and Falcon9 will transition into a primarily ride share rocket with infrequent large payload deployments to orbit. In which case, Neutron would compete with the F9 again and I'd imagine that SpaceX would offer the same pricing as neutron with better upmass capabilities or more orbital shell deployment options, as the F9 second stage already has engine relight capabilities built in. So doing that for small/medium sat multi-shell deployments isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. It may, say, not be able to do 100% perfect orbital deployments, but I imagine it could do 2-3 more satellites than Neutron can across the different shells and the remainder of the stage fuel margin is to move the booster either back into the Earth's atmosphere for burn up and ocean graveyard deposit or on an outwards trajectory to the GSO graveyard orbit where all spent stages go.
RocketLabs really needs to rethink their approach with Neutron, just fucking do away with the second stage, increase the size of the first stage body and try and do a small to medium sat SSTO that can land. In a market, unique capabilities is how you survive, not similar offerings as your competitor who has more performance/ISP time and upmass at same or lower cost.

That said it's still a rocket engine and as you stated throwing away the carbon fiber upper stage isn't ideal when the competition is fully reusable. They'll have to be earning savings elsewhere to compensate. To their credit they don't have to worry about fairings and RTLS means no expensive navy. Will probably come down to how well their carbon fiber design turns out. If it's as lightweight as they hope and they somehow manage to make it cheap things should be good for them. But that's a very ambitious goal.

The other risk they're going to run into is thermal stress as a result of exhaust plume from Archimedes' ignition on the internal and external surfaces of the Neutron's hippo-mouth "fairing". SpaceX got around with the risk of this by immediately causing a sideways procession of the rocket with cold gas nitrogen thrusters so that by the time 2nd stage ignition occurs and the exhaust plume makes contact with the F9 core, it's impacting the upper outer stage skin and the extra velocity is imparted which helps in doing the spin around process faster coupled with the receding heat and carbonized material/soot in the upper atmosphere gunking up the stage. So the internals of the F9 core near the interstage are always protected. This does not appear to be the case with Neutron. This means they'll have to either wait until the 2nd stage is at sufficient distance to Neutron at time of separation or reinforce the hippo shell so that each petal can withstand 2nd stage ignition (which may be possible based on their material science presentation) so that they can conduct a procession flip about for RTLS and not have thermal stress as a result of an engine plume interact with the internals of the rocket.
They're a competent company and I'm sure they've thought about this, so me saying it isn't some revelatory thing, but still, it's something to keep in mind that in the event that this turn around doesn't occur fast enough, the entire stage is being put at risk if during the landing sequence the upper stage area and avionics get damaged. At point which, the core stage is in an uncontrolled ballistic free-flight trajectory and if its over land in anyway, they're in deep deep shit.

At the scale musk wants colonization starship is probably not safe enough. If there are production defects + 6 months of travel you can't afford to lose 1/100 ships or 1/1000. Just to play devil’s advocate: wouldn’t a worst case scenario SLS failure/ultimate program shutdown really fuck up the US? We’ve essentially put all our eggs in one basket and by losing SLS there would then be no way to get Orion (much less anything else) out past LEO and the entire Artemis program would be set back to pretty much where China is.
Of course other options could be made available: Orion or Dragon on FH or Vulcan or New Glenn being sent to a Starship TLI transfer stage, some other type of bootlegged way to get to NRHO. But the point is there would be a pretty big setback even more than waiting on SLS

Starship has to go through 6 months of chilling in vaccum re-enter perfectly, 1/1000 that ends with a rain of charred bodies will be enough to put a damper on colonization efforts. You could even consider of a dedicated capsule like lander with many engine out capability as a superior option. Alternatively you could try to make starship robust enough to take moderate tile damage and still survive interplanetary heating. People's expectation/tolerance around safety only grows.

Anywhere whose gravitational pull is lesser than Earth would allow you to get away with other materials besides woven CNTs in the form of giant ass cables. I think the point of dedicated infrastructure grows more, because heavy lift on earth becomes cheaper. It's still restrictive on mars. due to fuel production long after we can build a low mars orbit base in leo.
You don't have to go all the way to a space elevator. I think a reasonable substitute is a large space station filled with a set of re-usable heavy landers for equipment and people, medical facilities and fuel
depot. Starships regularly refuel and supply the base, and you could have proper facilities there for maintance of starships, and a spin hab to get people used to gravity.

Nothing is stopping the concept at ending at we maximize starship development. But starship is not optimized as a martian heavy lift lander. It also holds too many people, if we stick to groups of 20 it can work out. But I would advocate the 2 stage solution for people specifically, cargo sure. Losing 1/100 cargo ships is fine. My ideal would be a very large capsule with a large cross section and multiple engines for a comparable performance. It'd have enough fuel to go down, and then up again. Big dragon, with a beefy heatshield meant to last years of use.

Depends on the context but generally they mean it's going to be a long term program like the ISS instead of doing half a dozen launches and calling it quits like Apollo.
Could also refer to the fact that SLS uses clean/renewable hydrolox.

They probably can't achieve that with SLS, but I suspect a lot of people at NASA know Starship is likely going to replace it entirely in due time. Getting rid of the ISS would free up money too.

Late in freedom's lifetime, right before it was wrapped into ISS NASA planned to use Soyuz as a lifeboat for crew escape (this was after the cold war). Soyuz would be carried up and down in the shuttle's payload bay and could get power from the station, it'd never operate on its own long enough to merit it having it's own solar arrays.

What is NASA up to? They still haven't started the work on DragonXL with SpaceX and now it seems like they want to modify this contract or start looking for alternatives? Did I understand this correctly?
And if SpaceX agreed to modify their contract, what could they change? I don't know much about details of space stations, but the first thing that comes to my mind is replacing the launch vehicle for Starship, instead of Falcon Heavy. In that case, they would presumably need to develop some third/kick stage for DragonXL, because I doubt that Starship would leave LEO for those missions.

Overall the program has at least accomplished it's PUBLIC goal of the overall program being cheaper than trying to rebuild a Saturn V-equivalent from scratch (that would have cost WAY more upfront money), but at the same time the program has accomplished it's PERSONAL goal of just trying to be a cost-plus money generator. It cost more than any other rocket to actually launch. This means the price/kg has gone UP which new rockets should never EVER do. It should have never been cost plus in the first place. Once they axed Constellation (which should have also been fixed price) they either should have given them a final figure up front and told them to make the rocket in 10 years and had every aspect of Artemis planned out a decade ago, or they (meaning congress) should have bit the bullet and offered a looot more money up front and told them to make a new kerolox booster rocket with >150T LEO capacity. Instead the US got told it was getting a "shuttle derived rocket" that would be the "cheapest, fastest option." Based off of its delays and it's cost to fly one rocket it is neither of these

Not going to read. No one knows anything about DXL and this is just an assumption based off of the RFI wording. Why would NASA want to change away from spacex? For a station that will likely be manned once a year at most it will need to maximize cargo deliveries and a giant DXL on a FH would be the best option. Cygnus, HTV-X, or some new ATV would cost way too much to develop compared to SpaceX doing DXL and not offer the same capabilities. MAYBE they will end up switching to some cargo Starship but this is more of a SpaceX offer, not something NASA is craving. NASA likes options and by spreading dependencies on Starship for the lander and FH for cargo they are at least still keeping their options spread even if its from the same provider

The fact that it produces a rocket at all is barely a consideration. You could burn down the whole program and they'd just replace Artemis with the lookalike Selene Exploration Program with the same contractors and the same budget and a rocket that looks nearly identical with a NET launch date of 2035. Then they'd all pat themselves on the back and put out a presser talking about how this is such a great step forward for human spaceflight.

Dragon XL also would, I think, need the extended faring for Falcon Heavy to launch with--and having a Starship do the cargo/hab transfer to gateway is just overall a better idea given the sheer value each launch would provide compared to DXL. Not to mention, an HLS starship docked at Gateway is basically a lifeboat for the entire station's crew at any given time down to the Moon or back to Earth which the DXL is incapable of being. It's a triple whammy win. No reason to segregate the contracts at this point, especially with Artemsis program schedules slipping cause SLS' hardware is entering a precarious state.

It may not have the dV to get back to LEO, but it would have the dV to land onto the Moon, where it would operate as a mobile base for the duration of its fuel, energy, and cargo stores. Considering how much bigger HLS Starship is relative to Gateway with its 100T drymass cargo bay + up to an additional 50T of crew hab area cargo compartments. Plus the fact that each HLS Starship is likely to have 2 Water Reclaimers, 2 Oxygenators, and multiple redundant modules for air filtration, recycling of materials and fluids, possible a dedicated hydro/aquaponics section, and medical facility means that its basically a mobile hospital/hotel compared to the gateway. In the event of an emergency, all crew entering and then dV-ing down to the surface would mean that they'd be way safer there than in space. Being in Moon's gravity, 1.6m/s^2 vs 0 m/s^2 in lunar orbit is still considerably more important to prevent bone degradation/muscle atrophy.
The added benefit of it being a hospital/hotel lifeboat, is that if they do end up on the moon, while they wait for rescue, they can basically go on science missions around the landing site and HILARIOUSLY, wherever this HLS lifeboat lands, is now another location that NASA has on the Moon as a new base that can be revisited and worked with in the future. Instead of selecting target sites, they now have a pre-expanded facility on the Moon.

The more you dig into this, the more and more valuable HLS Starship becomes to the gateway and moon mission profiles in damn near any capacity. It would be next to impossible to do surgery in the gateway, because your blood would just leak out into globs that float about--but on the moon, there's a pull on you, there's resistance, you CAN do surgery on the moon and the risk of you bleeding out because of null gravity is considerably lesser. Its a huge HUGE win for science and safety.

Even before a moonbase I wanna just have Apollo style landings but more ambitious and daring, a resurgence of lunar exploration, and even possibly visiting multiple sites (2 propulsive landings) in a single mission, and traveling further than Apollo 17's EVA every time on the new, improved lunar moon buggy and more than 2 astronauts on lunar EVA's. And possible even visting an Apollo landing site, just having all this extra capability and seizing the opportunity to use it to its fullest with Starship HLS.

Surely NASA can afford to be a little bit more bold and daring, and I think that having a Gateway logistics Starship that doubles as an emergency HLS would really allow for this kind of risk but since Gateway can't handle its massive balls apparently all we'll get is just Cargo Dragon XL...

I can't believe that even now in fucking 2020's the Artemis EVA's that NASA is planning are mostly a retread of the Apollo ones. Starting to feel like Gateway was a mistake, SpaceX will be too focused on Mars to give a fuck about doing this kind of lunar exploration themselves, but that focus will for the first decade be very narrow focused on the colony area, without any of these kind of manned exploratory hops taking place there either for a long while, and they'd be more difficult to do anyways on Mars.

Imagine an extended lunar surface exploration mission consisting of visiting several points of interest in one go for 2 weeks, imagine actual exploration of the lunar surface again

I feel like this kind of ambitious extended mission is only possible/acceptable to NASA if a backup lander exists (Gateway logistics Starship) but they cucked themselves out of that possibility with their maximum mass requirements, Dragon XL won't be capable of landing on the surface

Seem absolutely perfect and tailor made for Starship, it can do all 4, but it cannot be used because of said maximum mass requirements for Gateway docking. Holy shit NASA get it fucking together.

yeah hahah. The whole program is pretty batshit. Not THREE YEARS before Apollo the US was just learning how to rendezvous and dock in LEO. John Glenn was the first US astronaut to orbit the earth only six freaking years before Apollo 8 launched the first humans to lunar orbit on a Saturn V. Overall it was super ambitious across the board.
