One of my mother's relatives is bragging about their kid being a "doctor" and then I learn it's some bizarre DO title he got at MichiganU that only a for-profit network of schools in the US recognize.

What is this bullshit?

According to my healthcare admin professor, you have to take actual medical school courses on top of being an osteopathic courses to get the certification.

But one of his relatives (might've been his nephew) was a chiropractor, so obviously he's biased as hell.

MDs and DOs are pretty much the same. They're both licensed physicians and usually do residency and internship together. That's to say, if you consider an MD to be prestigious, then you should consider a DO to be equally as prestigious.

That makes me think his degree is shitty but it has nothing to do with being a DO, he could have gotten an MD or a PhD from the same place and it'd be equally shitty.

Basically Osteopathy was started by a quack in the late 1800s, who believed that treating the muscles & skeleton with various massages and stretches could cure almost anything. Said quack started a school and started training doctors in his methods; his doctors then fought hard to get their degrees recognized as medical degrees by state governments along the way.

Of course, in the process of this, most of the D.O. figured that most of their osteopathy stuff was in fact, ineffective compared to more conventional medical treatments, and began requiring more regular medical school courses and such. Today's doctors of osteopathy are basically just doctors that are trained in giving good back massages too.

Well, when doctors of osteopathy first got recognition, conventional medicine was pretty shitty too (look how many early 1900s medicines had shit like mercury or arsenic in them, or were just mixtures of opiates & alcohol.) Mark Twain was apparently a big advocate for the osteopathy movement, as one of the DOs at least did a better job of helping his daughter's epilepsy than conventional doctors.

As conventional medicine improved, gaining medicines & techniques that plainly worked really well, like antibiotics, the heads of the osteopathy organization were smart enough to recognize these improvements, and adopted them into the DO coursework. After all, who would take their child with an ear infection to DO for neck massages, if a simple round of antibiotics will clear it up in a few days? Over time this lead DO basically adopted most conventional treatments, with the whole massage related stuff being relegated to the narrow cases of back and muscle pain where it does seem to help.

Anyway, anecdotal, but as someone with life-long but now mild autoimmune issues, I prefer to see DOs because they are far less likely to pill push. If you aren't from the US then maybe you won't understand what I mean or why that matters.

From context we can see the other poster you were replying to implied that it is conventional knowledge that DOs are inferior to MDs and only a DO would claim otherwise.
