I think it is cool but the practicality is clickbait. I would want to see all of the heat losses of the system, not just the absorber.
These systems usually have a white hot emitter (usually tungsten), filters that reflect un-useable photons back to the emitter and an absorber (with a final reflector to send uncaptured photons back to the emitter).
For the sake of benchmarking absorbers their efficiency seems to be a record but when incorporated into the entire system, they won't reach 40%.
There's also the price of the system. Multiple layers of absorption makes me think it will be multiple times the cost of a standard PV.
They probably used more exotic (expensive) materials for the high energy photon layer and final reflector in order to set the record but they made something that isn't suited for mass marketing.
They may have a niche market for satellites but it won't be worth it on the ground.
They would still need heat collectors (mirrors) to reach the 2000K so I don't know if there will be much saved in land usage.
Also I don't think land usage is a huge constraint for solar so it would probably be more cost effective to just use more conventional PV cells to capture more light at lower efficiency.

Wouldn't it be easier to just make it direct current first and then fire it all away? It would be minimal if the gains they are saying are true. What could possibly absorb heat and turn it into electricity with such efficiency in the first place?

Gas turbines reach about 60% efficiency and steam turbines about 45%. They are limited by the materials available, particularly steam turbines, the steel gets very weak at high temperatures when the pressures are at the highest

It could just be acting as a heat pump that pulls heat out of the environment and puts it in the water.
My guess is there is cavitation from decompressing the water in the radial holes due to centripetal force. The decompression is enough to go from liquid to gas. When these pockets of water vapor are created, they draw in heat from their surrounding (the wall of the hole). The pockets of water vapor are pushed towards the axle due to liquid water being more dense than water vapor. The water vapor pockets continue to grow as they are stretched more and draw in more heat. Eventually the vapor pockets stretch the entire lengths of the holes and start to leak chunks out to the circumference. Once the chunks reach the circumference, they no longer are being stretched and re-compress which heats them a shit ton.

OP is talking about thermovoltaic, where as heat is transformed into electricity, passively similar to how solar panels passively transforms solar radiation into electricity. Thermovoltaic doesn't require electricity, it makes electricity.

This is extremely promising and I hope they actually have a working process, the lack of details makes it kinda seem so. This would be revolutionary for molten salt reactors and to their green meme marketing, concentrated solar power. Basically, you turn on the hot water tap inside the house, water starts is free to flow through the pipes, from the water tower it powers the micro hydro turbine, which powers the water heater, and then the hot water comes out the faucet.

Thermal storage seems pretty silly to me, it seems like a retarded idea to convert electricty to heat. But hey, energy density is higher than pumping water uphill, such systems are relatively cheap to build, and last a long time. So it might work.

We're in a proxy war with Russia right now. Russia is a major supplier of oil/gasoline.
We cut of Russia's exports to hurt them financially, but it's also hurting our oil reserves.
Scarcity of oil/gasoline causes prices to go up. Increased gas causes shipping prices of everything to go up, which increases the price of everything which increases inflation.

I mean, that is the narrative that's being fed to the public. Whether the public understands it, or that the narrative is even true and not a convoluted excuse for price gouging is still undetermined.

Why are you so fixated on this retard? Combined cycle power plants with gas turbines and heat recovery steam cycles can reach over 60% easily. Did you ever do thermodynamics in any capacity? What you are so fixated on is the exergy not energy efficiency and almost never used outside academic circles, the other guy is correct.

did you even read my post? I am talking about harvesting gamma radiation via multi layer photo cells. You make the layer only a few atom layers thick and the photon would just go through loosing a tiny bit of its energy. Do this often by layering your films you can harvest the energy without a risk of radiation destroying your product.
