So really university is just a signal that youre willing to work hard/put in years of your life/make a large investment to get some certificate that says you did. It weeds out the type of people who search for the quick buck.
Also I think university is much easier today than it was 50 years ago. The economy (more white collar jobs than before) has changed, so you need to pass more people through the system than you once did. Hence the exams have to be easier. I think university 50 years ago was something only the very best did (or the well off). We might see a reversal in the future though; I read China wants more people to go to vocational school or trades because theres too many university graduates:
