No it's much simpler. There is no way in the western culture to get honest feedback on your competence, so most people think they are bit above average by default. Which means that incompetent people overestimate their abilities, while the highly competendlt underestimate themselves.

It is just that some people tend to participate in a discussion without any knowledge on a topic and ignore the feedback giving to them. Best they can do is reading the abstract or summary of scientific publications and jump to conclusions. When these BS ideas are then shared with real experts, they politely reject them. So need to share
their BS among their peers, to get at least some confirmation. This confirmation leads to growing self esteem on this topic in a new created BS bubble
