General relativity is actually incredibly simple and intuitive if you've done the proper prerequisites for it. The only way you'd find it remotely difficult is if you haven't studied them.

Differential geometry. What anon said is half-true though. Unlike algebra that has many overly complicated unintuitive stuff like Galois theory, differential geometry is really really simple. There aren't many theorems and most of them are direct consequences of definitions. In fact, most definitions are engineered to fit the theorems we need. There are very few surprising results like Raychaudhuri theorem.
Easy as the math is, the actual physics is really difficult if you want to avoid all ad-hoc reasoning. Follow Weinberg's text if you want to go that route. Or choose one of the many mathematical GR texts.

Tensors aren't that hard, you just need to first learn calculus on manifolds for it to all make sense (you will then see that tensors are dead simple). I recommend the following book:

Jon Pierre Fortney, A Visual Introduction to Differential Forms and Calculus on Manifolds

Would love to hear what others recommend. There's this new book Visual Differential Geometry and Forms from the same author of Visual Complex Analysis but I haven't looked at it yet.

Also check out Frederic Schuller's lectures (that he did for the International Winter School on Gravity and Light), he's one of the best lecturers I've ever seen.
