Is it possible to turn studio monitors into room noise cancellation devices on top of being loudspeakers, using a microphone?
Even if it is only at a specific spot, not everywhere in the room.
If yes, how?

Blast an impulse from your speakers and measure the impulse response at that particular spot in the room and calculate an inverse transfer function. Put a microphone in that spot. Invert the noise coming into the microphone and apply the inverse transfer function. I guess this is the basic retard-level scheme, and it probably won't work due to delay issues and various imperfections, but maybe you can pick up some tricks from noise-cancelling headphones and integrate them into your algorithm.

Active noise cancellation is notoriously difficult even in a controlled environment such as a headset. Doing it in a room is going to be nearly impossible because of reverberations. You will have to start by sound dampening / proofing the room. Then have multiple microphones throughout the room. There is some open source code for sound cancelling. It is designed for headsets though so you have to pretend your entire room is the inside of an earbud.

Then you need to remove noise from yourself. So no loud typing or clicking mice. And definitely no talking.

Why would reverberations matter when their effects are fixed for a given area and you can cancel them out just the same?

I am only looking for a reduction in steady noises, like the humming of a refrigerator or dishwasher, or outside work noise, not perfect noise cancellation from things like typing.
But yeah, it seems to be too difficult to bother, so I guess I'll keep wearing my Bose headphones when it becomes an issue.

because of the Doppler Effect, you'd have to cancel out the entire spectrum of the reverb, not just the source noise.

I live in a townhouse and my family has obnoxiously noisy neighbors. My little brother could never sleep, as the family next to ours son was loud asf. He bought a cheap supwoofer and plays a low frequency tone out of it and he says it dilutes the noise pretty well.

well this comment may not be very realistic but people who have seen ufos up close say that everything becomes totally quiet in close proximity. so it may be the ufos are using noise suppression technology. how it actually works is another matter, but it seems different from noise cancellation. tldr: there's probably a clever way to achieve silence.

You ever notice that you only really notice the heavy base in closed cars through a wall to your neighbor? Loud banging to the tempo of the music? Perhaps if you reduce your speakers' base levels to the very minimum, you could effectively noise-cancel your room without physically altering your enviroment with padding.

Please test this hypothesis for me I do not have the speakers to test this

I think it would require a retarded amount of computing power to do it well. Sure it's easy enough to get the frequency spectrum for the background noise...but to cancel the noise you have to match the phase at all these frequencies. That's a much more difficult problem than filtering.
