A better question is comparing them to other third world nations and asking why have they improved so much more. I wouldn't go as far to say they are the best, hell even in Asia they are far from the best, but they've certainly come along way compared to where they were in the 80s. Why haven't Brazil, South Africa, India, Argentina, Mexico and Russia had the same success?

You might as well ask why throughout history Poland or Portugal have had better than average economies, and the answer would be the same: Because around 50% of any given sample is above average. There is nothing spectacular about the Chinese economy in terms of GDP per capita, it ranks 100 our of 226 in terms of GDP by PPP. And depending on which ranking that puts it almost exactly on the world average.
China's economy is extremely average (probably because it alone has such a large chunk of the global population).

China’s you economy is not that impressive compared to the US, when you take into account China’s economy is still smaller in nominal terms despite them having such a large population.
