I'm not sure if the issue lies more in the formulation of problems, or even the symbolic representation of the elements of problems (or since we're talking about 'internal monologue' perhaps even word choice is the culprit?).
I'm not sure how much I use visualization in the problem solving process, I do know that to complete something successfully I do need to see every step as if it's one continuous video loop. But, I'm writing a batch file, I will often think of the process as a flowchart, like I'll see each 'task' in the loop listed.
For more practical problems, say building a piece of furniture or cleaning a car component, I will have to envision where each component sits, and what tools I'll use in which order, like a video loop.
