Mark the balloon with various dots
Now expand the rubber
Expand it enough and the inks on the "dots" expand to the point that you can notice the pixels
One megaparsec represents the distance from 1 dot to another
If you stand on 1 dot, you think that the dot next to you is running away at 70km/sec
The dot next to your neighbor is at 140km/sec and so on till you break sol and it becomes impossible to observe.

If we used just km/sec, it implies that the expansion is constant
But in truth, the further away you look, the faster you think the object is moving away

Expansion is not happening in linear way.
Expansion is happening *everywhere*

Because "not being able to travel faster than the speed of light" just applies to matter within the space. Matter is slowed down if it has mass and you can't have less mass than no mass, hence not being able to travel faster than a particle with no mass. This doesn't mean that it applies to the universe itself which is currently expanding faster than the speed of light.

When something is very many parsecs away, it only travels a few km per second. So those are the units we use.
