And that's why you started this thread. Not because you're interested in issues involving nuclear waste products or the consequences of nuclear disasters but because you want to feel good being one of the trendy kids mindlessly going along with the crowd.

Lack of education to the threat of the contamination, because most of the soldiers were conscripts and teenagers thrown into the meet grinder; coupled with a desire to bring home a trophy of something cool to commemorate their deployment. Just like how when you travel to a new place you've never been to before, you'll generally try to bring a piece of it back with you in the form of media or some physical artifact. Same thing. But I doubt any of the soldiers deployed were given dosimeters and I'm sure they ignored the warnings of the Ukrainian nuclear scientists and workers at the plant, because they're Russian and the Ukranians don't know any better as per army orders.

Does the NY Times have proof that Russians dug those trenches? Or at they even exist where they're claimed to exist? Did they release video of their interviews with the staff there and is there reason to expect Ukrainians to be honest about what's happening in Ukraine?
