I don't think I understand the question very well, the world is littered with problems, both known and unknown, you can create a problem or do work on problems other tried but failed, or tried and where incomplete, or tried and where incompetent. I think if you create a problem to study you can run the risk of studying something irrelevant, don't you have professors colleges, or mentors that can point you in the direction of something you want to work on? A professor that mentored you will always be your professor, you just need to pick up the phone or sent it and email.
