$x^2 = a^2$ has two roots, $x = \pm a$ . You incorrectly used the definition that $i=\sqrt{-1}$ . That is generally NOT the definition (it's a definition, but you must be consistent). The real definition is $i^2 = -1$ which means $i=\pm\sqrt{-1}$ . I trust you can find the error of your math now.

this is a commonly cited myth.

$\sqrt{ab} = \sqrt{a}\sqrt{b}$

This is valid for complex numbers so long as you recall that you need to take the complex conjugate of one of the numbers. That's what it means to square a number in C.

$sqrt{ab} = i\sqrt{a}i^*\sqrt{b} = -\sqrt{a}\sqrt{b}$
