Is you want to learn something on a comparative level to a college graduate, you will have to spend about the same amount of time on it without an instructor (= more difficult), which defeats the purpose of doing this yourself. or if you take your time, then learning it will take longer.

It's just a matter of drive and focus, a true self learner does not need what a college student needs, guidance, rules, punishment, and financial skin in the game. In fact college can be more difficult for a true self taught individual. You can see the difference in a self guided individual in graduates. The one that cannot learn on their own, is the one that just does their job and collect their checks, the self learner will go on to make discoveries. The self learner can be see as an inventor as well.
The biggest draw back of the self taught is access to the crafts facilities. But if they are truly committed to the study they will surround themselves with like minded people and start making connections and and given chances that the person that cannot strive on their own won't get, hence the college student.

It's just that there are no more good universities. Every institution has been subverted and the only way true scientific knowledge will persevere is through the motivated independent renaissance man.

I don't think anything can replace a great mentor who can actively work with you, that's true for many skills/trades/subjects other than physics, but let's not act like plenty of professors or instructors provide anything of relevance beyond what you'd get from the text book.

To be fair, it seems the primary point of OP's image is that self-learners will probably not spend sufficient time studying compared to a full-time student. Someone who is in full immersion while language learning will accumulate more hours than a full-time student who is not immersed, who will spend more time than a person who is working full time and spending an hour here and there learning as a hobby.

One problem is there is often little practicality in doing so and hence little motivation. Another problem is the people who discuss doing this are often midwits who have to start by relearning algebra and so actually starting on the true goal is like years away.

Which is just Krashen's comprehensible input hypothesis. The concept has existed for a while, but that doesn't mean that colleges have adapted at all.
The Latin learning community online has had a little revolution itself after rediscovering LLPSI, a book based on comprehensible input. The book has existed for like 50 years now, but colleges still teach grammar translation, that leaves you at a completely crippled level of actual language comprehension.

The argument for self learners has always been that it's more efficient to learn by yourself, so the guy in OP pic is a faggot. College was only ever good for the resources and social aspect, with the internet now only the social aspect is left for it.

He might delude himself into thinking that his stupid analogies are "explaining" relativity but in reality they're something else entirely that generally gives people very wrong ideas. The main thing that can't be self-taught is the "culture" of a particular field, that can only really be picked up through immersion. Things like what has or hasn't been done before, who is currently doing what etc.

you can be a self-learner and be taking language classes at the same time. the goals/outcomes of those 2 approaches are different.
