Fundamental particles get their mass by interacting by interacting with a Higgs field that prevents them from moving at the speed of light. If this field didn’t exist they would be moving so fast that they wouldn’t be experiencing the effects of time and likewise any object colliding with them would be frozen in time aswell due to the momentum of 2 objects being the same before and after a collision occurs
That’s why mass is apparent and also why the speed of light imposes a limit on how much energy can be in any system at any given time
