Exactly how much is dentistry research being held back on purpose?

I have the very strong intuition that they are not using the best technology possible, on purpose, to increase profits and keep you just sick enough to come back more.

But I'm not an expert in the area. Maybe /sci/ has some dentistry researchers around.
