>>14370496Its just nerdy scientist humor. They like to assign hyperbolic yet trivial labels to things, as a sort of in joke. The Big Crunch. The Great Attractor. Even the name "Quark" is derived from a nonsensical word used in a novel by James Joyce.
Thing is the Universe did not start off with a big bang. Firstly there was non-existence. Then everything that exists popped into existence in a state of pure energy. The Universe did not expand and is not expanding. That is a popular misconception, there is nothing for it to expand into, its as big as it will ever get. Instead what is happening is that the matter within the Universe is shrinking. It is exchanging energy for time. The net effect is to make it look like the Universe is expanding, but fundamentally there is no difference between matter shrinking and space expanding, it just depends on one's perspective. Similar to how it appears to Earth bound observers that the sun, stars and planets are orbiting the Earth .
