It worked very well for the role of Sherlock Holmes but has sucked in pretty much every other movie he has been in. He comes off as unlikable, which is a liability for most of the characters he plays. It's ok for Sherlock Holmes because we expect Sherlock to be an asshole but if you want people to identify with Turing, he needs to be a sympathetic character, not the nerd who loved being hallway monitor in elementary (my dear Watson) school.
