It depends on the material and how much reading you've done and the particular subject, and your learning goals. If the textbook is broken down into 2-5 page section, then I'd say like 2-4 problems per section. If the textbook is divided into long chapters that are like 20-40 pages, then I'd recommend doing like 5-10 problems per chapter.

I agree with this. I would to a couple of each type before moving on to the next chapter. After having read that one, return to the undone exercises and do them, and apply the same technique to the current ones. If there aren't a lot of exercises I suppose you can always redo some.
Doing all of them at once is definitely a waste of time.

Exercises have been consistently proven to not actually be an efficient way to learn a new subject, the have been numerous publications on this on both STEM and psychology journals.
