You can't honestly tell me that most math professors at top universities and institutes couldn't be making more money as quants in the private sector. The reason they're not doing it is because they don't care about money past a certain point.
Now just to state it again, this applies to actually talented and top tier persons in STEM. If some average guy tells you he'd rather be making 80k doing mindless thankless work, he's just in hypercope mode and isn't actually capable of making money.
