Sure, a lot of people in 1700 were farmers, but a fuckload of people still loved in cities. Even if you go back to Rome, the romans ate wheat that was grown by Egyptians. Nobody in Latium grew their own food except for the literal innawoods outsiders, so this connection to earth you're talking about was severed long ago.
Aside from all that, yes just avoid eating brand named corporate bullshit because it's legit trash. You can still buy fresh foods at the grocery and just cook real food yourself, heck you can even support your local butcher. Where I live there are Mexican who essentially give away their fresh food because it's cheap af and they'd rather make a few bucks off of it than spend years and thousands of dollars trying to deal with the gov just to have 9/10 of it thrown out.
