why do people say this?

youre taking them out of the lab and giving them good medicines. in the lab they would have been tested on
they shouldnt exist at all but its either that or having to test things on humans. i want one as a pet

especially if i got something like a diabetic mouse, and gave it mouse insulin and a good life

So do that. They may still die, but they probably appreciate the freedom and feeling better. I was always a sucker for the ones at the pet store that would be bullied by the others, and look roughed up. If you're not doing the treatments yourself, bringing them to a stranger at any point that examines them roughly might make them stressed to the point of dying. It's very painful to watch.
They frequently get tumors, and they're not always in places like their abdomens or the side of their legs. If they're in the head at all, well, you know.
Try it. Give them some kind of fleeting mouse happiness. Just know that it doesn't really get easier each time you lose one.

the runt is an important part of the mouse pack. its usually the one thats left behind (in the "wild" - so, in someone elses house) to look for food, to see if any more turns up when the mice move on
i guess that is translating to the humans where you want the runt, to take it home. like when the mice move on and leave the runt behind (near the humans, and the traps etc.) youre putting that mouse into that situation from the pet store... with a different application

im not doing it to "save" them from the scientists. they were born for that purpose
but it would be nice to save one from the scientists. not if it will still be in pain or have a shorter life-span, though. thanks for your advice. i dont think ill get a mouse

Right, but we remove them from a natural environment where these drives are useful when placing them in any situation where they're not "wild" any longer. They have an instinct that isn't useful anymore in that context.
When mice are used for laboratory testing, there's not the highest likelihood that they would make it out of that lab alive anyway. They'll be dissected for tissue analysis, or be euthanized once the experiment has run its course.
You should still get some, even if not for the original intended purpose. They're inquisitive and fun to watch, and very interactive if you handle them consistently. They have an abbreviated lifespan by default, but if you get one from mouse breeders they'll be far less likely to have issues with tumors.

its interesting how we get cancer/tumors, as humans based on this

ill probably just get a healthy mouse instead of getting one to watch it die, and if i like mice, then breeding the mouse i have to have another generation raised as a baby mouse
