There's also the chance that they'd be little more than a biological expansion card for a technological singularity. Their purpose would be to do something less expensively than its inorganic counterpart and the inorganic would probably have bred or grown the old lifeform to purpose.
As for other lifeforms encountered, they'd probably also be modified, studied, or destroyed for resources.
Why wouldn't this be the natural endpoint of a socially darwinistic civilization becoming advanced? They'd eventually get wiped by the one that did this.
