on the other hand building the selling the machines, while still giving you a fat retirement, only happens sometimes. you need R&D to advance tech enough to create an incentive or demand for a better manufacturing process, or to find a customer with enough money and demand to create an incentive to build an existing machine of some various tech size/cost.
remember amd split off glofo because it didnt have steady enough income to support itself. when glofo became free to take on anyone in the industry including amd as a customer, they had a lot more business opportunity.
