Why does the modern world agree to base year one on the birth of Christ?

The first year after the birth of Jesus is year zero.
The first decade consists of the years 0 to 9, and the first century the years 0 to 99.
Just like the 22nd century consists of the years 2100 to 2199.

Science is born in the west, the west was Christian and used the Christian Calendar. Now we live in a secular society, but changing all dates would be a mess so, by convention, we kept using that calendar. If we want to secularize the calendar completely, we can use CE and BCE or considering some other important thing happening in year 1 as a reference, like the Ara Pacis by Augustus or the book Ab Urbe Condita by Titus Livius.

Secretly the change to a "scientific year 0" has already happened. All machines keep time using the Unix epoch, so bascially we've made 1970 CE the new 0 and we just count nanoseconds now.
