why is post-secondary education in the US so expensive? even crappy state schools have ridiculous tuition, and at times force you to live on campus for part of your degree which makes it cost even more.

There's no downward pressure on price. No matter how much they increase tuition and fees, students will pay it, or more accurately, the larger loans they'll agree to.
That said, community college is usually much cheaper and you can usually take at least your first year of classes there but most students don't because they want to be part of the party scene at the universities.

Because if they want you they'll provide tuition waiver. If they don't want you they'll take your money long enough for you to figure out you're not fit or to earn a tuition waiver
