PhD's are gatekept for the children of the wealthy. That and professor positions are all status symbols for families more than anything, the equivalent of the accomplished family pianist.
He wrongfully assumed that taking out as many loans as possible and throwing everything away just to get the check in the box of PhD, he would have a position to relax and recover. Its obvious that this person has no talent, no smarts, and just bruteforced their way academically.
