Why can't larger fish get rid of mercury? Why does it accumulate in their bodies from the small fish they eat?

So I can eat larger quantities of fish without getting sick. Are these fish purposely accumulating mercury so that I don’t eat to many of them? Is it some defence mechanism?

sounds to me like the small fish can't clear it either. Maybe animals in general have a hard time with mercury. why did god do this

the toxic form of mercury is fat-soluble (meaning you can't just pee it out) so it sticks around for a long time in the body. this is also why potheads will often test positive for months after their last toke.
